When to use which

  • Headlines and book titles: Title Case. It keeps short words like “of”, “the” and “with” lower case, as most style guides ask.
  • Text typed with Caps Lock on: Sentence case, then fix names by hand.
  • Buttons, labels and slide headings: Sentence case or Capitalize Each Word, depending on your house style.
  • Code: camelCase for JavaScript variables, PascalCase for class names, snake_case for Python and databases, kebab-case for URLs and CSS classes, CONSTANT_CASE for constants.

Tips

  • Convert a list at once. The programming cases treat each line separately, so a column of labels becomes a column of variable names.
  • camelCase back to words. Existing camelCase is split at the capitals, so userFirstName turns into user_first_name with snake_case.
  • Check the length. Paste the result into the Word Counter to see if a title fits 60 characters.

Common problems

  • Names are now lower case: Sentence case cannot tell a name from a normal word. Capitalise names and acronyms after converting.
  • Copy did nothing: some browsers block the clipboard. The text is then selected for you; press Ctrl+C (or ⌘C on a Mac).
  • Title Case capitalised a short word: the first and last word of a line are always capitalised, as style guides require.

Text Compare shows the differences between two versions of a text, and Base64 encodes or decodes text for code and e-mail.

Private by design

Your text is converted on your own device and never uploaded. Nothing you paste is saved or sent to a server. See how it works.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Title Case and Capitalize Each Word?

Title Case follows the headline style of AP and Chicago: short words such as "a", "and", "of", "the" and "to" stay lower case unless they are the first or last word. Capitalize Each Word puts a capital on every word, including the short ones.

How do I undo a conversion?

Click Undo. It brings back the text as it was before the last conversion. Undo goes back one step, so convert one case at a time if you want to compare.

Does Sentence case keep names and acronyms?

No. Sentence case makes everything lower case and then capitalises the first letter of each sentence and the word "I". Names, places and acronyms such as NASA need to be fixed by hand afterwards.

What happens to punctuation in camelCase or snake_case?

The programming cases split the text into words and drop spaces and punctuation, then join the words with capitals, underscores or hyphens. Each line is converted on its own, so you can convert a list of names in one go.

Does it work with accented letters and other alphabets?

Yes. Letters such as é, ü and ß, and alphabets such as Greek and Cyrillic, change case correctly. Chinese, Japanese and Korean have no upper and lower case, so they stay as they are.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server or saved.
