Free image to text converter: copy text from screenshots, photos and scans in your browser. No sign-up, no upload, edit the result before you copy it.
Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works
Image to Text is a free image to text converter: it reads the text in a picture and gives it to you as plain text you can copy, right in your browser. It works on screenshots, photos of documents, slides and scans, and the image never leaves your device.
How to copy text from an image
Click Choose an image or drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC file onto the page.
Wait a few seconds while the text is found and read. The first time, the recognition engine is downloaded.
Check the text, fix anything that was misread, then click Copy text or Download .txt.
Supported; pick the language for scripts other than Latin, Chinese and Japanese
Lines are returned top to bottom; text that sits side by side on the same row is joined with spaces. For a picture of a table, Image to Excel keeps its rows and columns instead.
After you copy the text
Need to fix the capitalisation of text read from a sign or a slide in all capitals? Paste it into the Case Converter. To check the length of a caption or essay, use the Word Counter.
Private by design
Recognising text in the browser means your screenshots and documents stay on your device. See how it works to check it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded?
No. The text is recognised by your browser on your own device. The image is never sent to a server, which matters for screenshots of messages, documents and account pages.
Which languages are supported?
Choose under Text language. Auto reads English, about 45 other languages written in the Latin alphabet (French, German, Spanish, Polish, Czech, Vietnamese and more), Chinese and Japanese; Chinese and Japanese are switched to a larger model automatically (about 18 MB, once). Korean, Russian and other Cyrillic languages, Arabic, Persian and Urdu, Hindi and other Devanagari languages, Thai, Greek, Tamil and Telugu each have their own model (about 7 MB, downloaded once when you pick it). Handwriting is not recognised reliably.
Why does it take a moment the first time?
The recognition engine (about 15 MB) is downloaded the first time you use the tool and then cached by your browser, so the next images are read much faster.
What images work best?
Screenshots and clear photos or scans of printed text. Very small, blurry, rotated or handwritten text may be missed or read wrongly, so check the result before you use it.
How do I copy text from an image on Windows, iPhone or Android?
Open this page in any browser, choose the image and click Copy text. It works the same on every device and nothing is installed or uploaded. Phones and Windows 11 also have built-in options, such as Live Text on iPhone, Google Lens on Android and Text actions in the Windows Snipping Tool.
Is this image to text converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no daily limit and no watermark, and the text never leaves your device.
Can I edit the text before copying?
Yes. The recognised text appears in a box you can edit, then copy or download as a .txt file.
