Noise Reduction removes background noise from speech: fans, hum, traffic, typing and room noise behind a voice. It uses a small neural network made for voices that runs in your browser, so your recording is never uploaded.
How to remove background noise
- Choose a voice recording, podcast, meeting or video.
- Pick the strength; leave Make the voice louder on for quiet recordings.
- Click Remove noise, compare with the original and download.
Good to know
| Recording | Result |
|---|---|
| Voice with fan, hum or traffic | Very clean |
| Online meeting, phone call | Clearer voices |
| Music, singing with instruments | Not suitable (made for speech) |
What the settings do
The recording is cleaned in steps of 10 milliseconds. For every step, the network estimates which part of the sound is voice and which is noise, and keeps the voice. The small engine (about 1.5 MB) is loaded only when you click Remove noise for the first time.
- Strong uses only the cleaned sound. Most noise is gone; on a very noisy recording the voice can sound a little thin.
- Medium mixes back 20% of the original. Noise is clearly lower, the voice keeps more of its natural sound.
- Light mixes back 45% of the original. Good when the noise is mild and you mainly want to take the edge off.
- Make the voice louder raises the cleaned recording so its loudest moment reaches −1 dB. Cleaning often makes a recording sound quieter, because the noise was part of its loudness.
The result is saved at 48 kHz in the format you choose.
Tips for the best result
- Use the original recording. A file that was already compressed to a low bitrate has artefacts that make noise harder to tell apart from the voice.
- Clean first, then edit. Remove noise before cutting, joining or compressing, so every later step works with the clean sound.
- Try Strong first. If the voice sounds robotic or the ends of words are cut off, switch to Medium.
- Listen to the quiet parts. Pauses between sentences show best how much noise is left.
Limits
The tool reduces noise; it cannot rebuild a voice that is buried under it. A speaker far away in a loud room becomes clearer, but not like a studio recording. Distortion from a recording that was too loud, and echo from a big empty room, are only partly reduced. Other voices in the background are speech too, so they are not fully removed.
