Ukulele Tuner tunes soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles to standard G C E A with your microphone. The needle shows whether each string is too low or too high, and clicking a string plays its note so you can also tune by ear. Pitch is detected in your browser and nothing is recorded.
How to tune your ukulele
- The tuner opens set to Ukulele (G C E A).
- Click Start tuning and allow the microphone.
- Pluck the G string, nearest your chin, and watch the needle.
- Too low: tighten the peg. Too high: loosen it. Stop when the needle is green and the tuner says In tune.
- Do the same for C, E and A, then check all four again.
Ukulele strings and frequencies
| String | Position | Note | Frequency (A4 = 440 Hz) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4th | nearest your face | G4 | 392.0 Hz |
| 3rd | C4 (middle C) | 261.6 Hz | |
| 2nd | E4 | 329.6 Hz | |
| 1st | nearest the floor | A4 | 440.0 Hz |
The 4th string G is higher than the 3rd string C. This “high G” or re-entrant tuning is what makes a strummed ukulele chord sound bright and close together. Some players fit a low-G string instead; to tune one, switch to Chromatic and tune it to G3, an octave lower.
Tips for ukulele
- Tune up to the note. Nylon strings slip back a little after you turn the peg. Go slightly below the note and come up to it.
- New strings need time. Expect to retune several times in the first sessions. Give each new string a gentle pull along its length to help it settle.
- Hold it naturally. Tune in the position you play; pressing on the neck or body can bend the pitch slightly.
- Check a chord. After tuning, strum C major (only the 3rd fret of the A string) and listen; it should ring clear.
- Tune by ear. Click a string in the tuner to hear its reference note and match the string to it.
