Video to Text transcribes what is said in a video: lectures, webinars, interviews, screen recordings and social clips. Download plain text, or SRT / VTT subtitles with timings. The video is read on your device and never uploaded, which matters for internal meetings and recordings of other people.
How to transcribe a video
- Choose the video file. Only its sound is read, so even a large video is ready in a few moments.
- Choose the spoken language. For English, English (fast) is quick; English (more accurate) handles accents and noise better.
- Click Transcribe and keep the tab open.
- Correct the text, choose Text, Subtitles (.srt) or Web subtitles (.vtt) under Download as, and download or copy it.
Getting the video file
| Video | Where the file is |
|---|---|
| Zoom, Teams, Google Meet recordings | Saved on your computer or downloadable from the meeting’s recordings page |
| Phone videos | iPhone: tap Choose and pick from the Photo Library. Android: Gallery or DCIM/Camera |
| Screen recordings | Your Videos or Movies folder, or where the recorder saves |
| Your own YouTube videos | YouTube Studio > Content > Options > Download |
| Webinars and courses | The download link from the platform, if it offers one |
Text or subtitles?
Use Text to read, search, quote or summarise a video: meeting notes, a blog post from a talk, study notes from a lecture. Use SRT or VTT to show the words on screen, with every line timed to the speech. Both come from the same transcription, so you can download one and then the other.
Tips
- Music under the speech lowers accuracy. If a video has loud background music, extract the voice with the Vocal Remover (Vocals only) and transcribe that file.
- A video in another language: choose that language and tick Translate to English to get an English transcript.
- Long videos: an hour-long recording works well on a computer. Phones can do it too but take longer and need more memory.
- Only need the sound? Video to MP3 saves the audio track as a file.
