Character Counter shows how many characters your text has, with and without spaces, while you type or paste. The Limits panel tells you how many characters are left for an X post, an Instagram caption, a LinkedIn post, an SMS, a page title and a meta description. Word, sentence and paragraph counts are shown as well. The text stays in your browser.
How to count characters
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Read Characters for the full count, including spaces and line breaks.
- Read Characters without spaces if a form or brief counts only visible characters.
- Check the Limits panel. Each line shows how many characters are left, or turns red and shows how many are too many.
- Click Clear to empty the box.
Character limits
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | 280 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 |
| Meta description | 160 |
| Page title | 60 |
| SMS (1 message) | 160 |
All limits are compared with the full count, with spaces, because that is how the platforms count.
With or without spaces
Most websites, social networks and phones count every character, including spaces. Some translation and typesetting jobs, school forms and application portals ask for the count without spaces instead. Both figures update together, so you can check the one you need.
Tips
- Trim a post: shorter words and fewer filler phrases save more characters than removing spaces.
- Line breaks count: each new line is one character, which matters in short limits such as an SMS.
- Titles and descriptions: write the page title and meta description here first, then paste them into your site.
- Fix capitals: convert a heading to Title Case with the Case Converter.
