Reverse Audio plays a recording backwards: for the reverse audio challenge, sound effects, music production or hidden messages. Combine it with a speed or pitch change if you like. Your recording is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
How to reverse audio
- Choose an audio file, a voice recording or a video. Play backwards is already ticked.
- Leave the speed at 1× and the pitch at 0, or change them for an effect.
- Click Apply, listen to the backwards version and download it as MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC or OGG.
The reverse singing challenge
- Record yourself singing or saying a short phrase with the Voice Recorder.
- Reverse it here and listen to the backwards version several times.
- Record yourself imitating the backwards sound, then reverse that recording.
- If you copied it well, your original phrase comes back, with a strange accent.
Short phrases of two to five seconds work best. Cut longer recordings with the Audio Cutter first.
Ideas for producers and video makers
| Effect | How |
|---|---|
| Reverse cymbal or swell | Reverse a cymbal crash: it rises into the next beat |
| Ghostly voice | Reverse a spoken line, maybe with −3 semitones |
| Transition whoosh | Reverse the end of a sound with a long echo or reverb |
| Reverse reverb | Add reverb to a word in your editor, reverse, add reverb again, reverse back |
| Riser before a drop | Reverse a chord or a pad and slow it to 0.75× |
Hidden messages
Backmasking, hiding a message that is only clear when played backwards, has a long history in rock music. To check a song for one, reverse the part in question and listen; it helps to cut that part first so you can replay it quickly. Most claimed messages are the brain finding words in random sounds, which is a fun experiment in itself.
Good to know
The whole file is reversed, the end becomes the start. Reversing does not change the sound quality; only the chosen save format does.
