To remove a password from a PDF, open the file here, type its password once and save the unlocked copy. The new file opens without asking for a password, on any device. It all happens in your browser, so the document and the password stay on your device.
This only works when you know the password. The tool does not crack or recover forgotten passwords. Only unlock PDFs that you own or are allowed to open.
Remove the password in three steps
- Click Choose a PDF and pick the protected file.
- Type the password in the Password box and click Open.
- Click Save unlocked PDF. The copy is saved as, for example,
statement-unlocked.pdf.
Typical files people unlock
| File | Why remove the password |
|---|---|
| Bank and card statements | Upload them to a mortgage, rental or visa portal that rejects protected files |
| Payslips and tax documents | Send them to an accountant without sharing the password separately |
| Insurance and utility bills | Combine them with other documents in Merge PDF |
| Your own archived files | Open them later without remembering an old password |
If the password is not accepted
- Check capital letters, spaces and the keyboard layout.
- Look at the email or letter that came with the file. Banks and employers often explain the password pattern, such as part of your name plus your date of birth.
- Try the password in your usual PDF app. If it fails there too, the password is wrong, and only the sender can help.
PDFs that open but cannot be printed or copied
Some PDFs open without a password but block printing, copying or editing. Open such a file here, no password needed, and click Save unlocked PDF to save a copy without those restrictions.
After unlocking
Anyone who gets the unlocked copy can read it, so send it only where it is needed and delete it when you are done. To make it smaller before uploading, use Compress PDF.
