Video to GIF Converter

Make an animated GIF from part of a video in your browser: choose the start, end, size and frame rate. MP4, MOV and WebM. Free, nothing uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

Video to GIF turns a short part of a video into an animated GIF that plays everywhere: in chats, emails, documents, forums and slides. Pick where it starts and ends, how wide it is and how smooth, and the GIF is made in your browser.

How to make a GIF

  1. Click Choose a video and drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file.
  2. Set From and To, a Width and Frames per second.
  3. Click Make GIF, check the preview, then Download.

From and To are pre-filled with the first five seconds. Times use minutes and seconds (0:12) and accept tenths (0:12.5).

Size guide

Use Width Frames per second Length
Chat reaction 320 px 8–12 2–4 s
Documentation, tutorials 480–640 px 12–15 5–10 s
Smooth motion 480 px 24 2–3 s

What decides the size of a GIF

Three settings multiply each other: length × frames per second × width × height. Doubling the width roughly quadruples the pixels in each frame. Going from 12 to 24 frames per second doubles the number of frames. So a 3-second GIF at 800 px and 24 fps can easily be ten times the size of the same clip at 480 px and 12 fps.

Content matters too. A still screen with one moving cursor stays small; a shaky phone clip, where every pixel changes in every frame, gets large fast. If the result is too big, change one setting at a time, starting with width.

Colours

GIF can show only 256 colours in each frame. Each frame here gets its own palette chosen from that frame’s colours, which keeps skin tones and screen recordings clean. Smooth gradients, such as a sunset sky or a soft shadow, may show visible bands; that is a limit of the format, not of the settings.

Tips

  • For screen recordings, 640 or 800 px keeps small text readable; 8–12 frames per second is enough for mouse movement.
  • To find exact times in a long video, play it in any player (or in Trim Video), note where the moment starts and ends, then type those times here.
  • If a site accepts video, an MP4 is usually far smaller than a GIF. GIF to MP4 does the reverse conversion.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF from a video?

Choose the video, set From and To (for example 0:02 to 0:06), pick a width and frame rate, then click Make GIF and download it.

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF is an old format that stores every frame as a picture. Make it shorter, narrower (320 or 480 px) or use fewer frames per second to keep it small.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 600 frames, for example 50 seconds at 12 frames per second. For chats and documents a few seconds works best.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is processed in your browser, on your device, and never sent anywhere.

Does the GIF have sound?

No. GIF is an image format and cannot hold audio. If the sound matters, trim the video instead and share a short MP4.

Can I make it wider than the video?

No. If you pick a width larger than the video, the original width is used, because enlarging only makes the GIF bigger without adding detail.
