Change Video Speed

Speed up or slow down a video from 0.25× to 8× in your browser, with the sound at normal pitch. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV. Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

Change Video Speed makes a video faster or slower, from 0.25× slow motion to 8× fast forward. The sound keeps its normal pitch, so voices do not turn into chipmunks, or you can let the pitch change like a tape, or remove the sound. Before you start, the page shows how long the new video will be. The video is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

How to change video speed

  1. Choose a video: MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV.
  2. Pick the Speed. The new length appears under the options, for example “2:00.0 becomes 1:00.0” at 2×.
  3. Choose the Sound: normal pitch, pitch changes too, or removed.
  4. Choose the Frame rate: 24, 30 or 60 fps.
  5. Click Change speed, keep the tab open while it works, then check the result and download it.

Which speed to choose

Speed Effect Good for
0.25× Four times slower Sports technique, a splash, a jump
0.5× Half speed Dance moves, tutorials, dramatic moments
0.75× Slightly slower Fast talkers, learning a song or a routine
1.25×, 1.5× A bit faster Lectures, meetings, long explanations
2× Double speed Cutting a clip down to fit a post
3×, 4× Much faster Cooking, crafts, a drive or a walk
8× Timelapse Painting, building, clouds, a long process

Three ways to handle the sound

  • Same speed, normal pitch (no chipmunk voices): the sound is sped up or slowed down with its pitch kept. Speech stays easy to understand from about 0.75× to 2×.
  • Same speed, pitch changes too (like a tape): faster sound gets higher, slower sound gets deeper, like a tape or a record played at the wrong speed. Good for comic effects.
  • Remove the sound: a silent video. Useful for timelapses where the sound would be noise, or when you will add music later.

Frame rate

The result is re-encoded at the frame rate you choose. 30 fps suits most uses and keeps the file a sensible size. 60 fps looks smoother when you speed up action and makes a bigger file. 24 fps gives a film look. Slowing down does not invent new frames, so smooth slow motion needs footage filmed at a high frame rate, such as a phone’s slow-motion mode.

Common uses

  • Slow motion for sport, pets, kids and dance. See Slow Motion Video.
  • Speed up a long recording to fit a time limit on Reels, TikTok or Shorts. See Speed Up Video.
  • Watch lectures faster and keep the speaker easy to follow at 1.25× or 1.5×.
  • Make a timelapse at 8× from an ordinary video.

Good to know

  • The output is MP4 (H.264 and AAC), or WebM in browsers that cannot encode MP4.
  • iPhone videos in HEVC cannot be read in some browsers. Try a recent Chrome or Edge, or Safari on a Mac.
  • Long videos take longer, since every frame is re-encoded. Keep the tab open until it is done.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the speed of a video?

Choose a video, pick a speed from 0.25× to 8×, choose what happens to the sound and click Change speed. The page shows the new length before you begin. When it is done, check the result and download it.

Will voices sound like chipmunks?

Not with the default setting. Same speed, normal pitch keeps voices and music at their natural pitch, only faster or slower. Choose the tape-style option if you want the pitch to change with the speed, or remove the sound.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read and processed in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Will slow motion look smooth?

Slowing down stretches the frames you have, so 0.5× of a 30 fps clip plays at 15 different frames a second. For smooth slow motion, film at 60 fps or more with your phone's slow-motion mode and then slow it down here.

What format is the result?

MP4 with H.264 video and AAC sound, which plays almost everywhere. In browsers that cannot encode MP4, it is WebM. The video is re-encoded at the frame rate you choose: 24, 30 or 60 fps.

Why can't it read my iPhone video?

iPhones often record in HEVC, which some browsers cannot read. Try a recent Chrome or Edge, or Safari on a Mac.
