Opus to MP3 turns .opus voice messages from WhatsApp, Telegram and other apps into MP3 files you can play anywhere, keep or send. The message is converted on your device, so private conversations are never uploaded.
How to convert a voice message
- Save or export the voice message as a file (see below).
- Choose the .opus or .ogg file here. MP3 is already selected under Save as.
- Click Convert, listen to the preview and download the MP3.
Where to find the voice message file
| App | How to get the file |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp on Android | Open a file manager and go to Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Media/WhatsApp Voice Notes. Messages are in dated subfolders. |
| WhatsApp on iPhone | Long-press the voice message, tap Forward, then the share icon, and choose Save to Files. |
| WhatsApp chat export | In the chat, choose Export chat with media: voice notes are included as .opus files. |
| Telegram Desktop | Right-click the voice message and choose Save As. |
| Telegram on phones | Forward the message to Saved Messages, then open it on Telegram Desktop or Web and save it there. |
Menu names change between app versions, but the idea is the same: get the message out of the app as a file, then open it here.
Why convert to MP3?
Opus is very good for speech: a voice message is tiny and still clear. But many programs, older phones, car stereos, email recipients and upload forms cannot play .opus files. As MP3, the message can be attached to an email, added to a presentation, played on any computer or kept as a memory.
Tips
- Keep the quality at 128 kbit/s. Voice messages are mono speech recorded at a low bitrate; more does not help.
- A quiet or noisy message? Run it through Noise Reduction or the Volume Booster, which can save as MP3 directly.
- Converting several messages: convert one, click Open another file and repeat.
- To join several messages into one file, use the Audio Joiner.
