Where 7z files come from
7z is the native format of 7-Zip, a free Windows archiver. Because it usually packs files tighter than ZIP, it is popular for large downloads: game mods, emulator packs, driver bundles, open-source builds, scanned book collections and backup sets. The catch is that the person receiving it needs software that reads 7z. macOS, iPhone, Android and ChromeOS cannot open it out of the box, and only recent versions of Windows 11 can.

How to open a 7z file
- Click Choose an archive or drop the .7z file on the page.
- Wait a moment while the file list is read. The status line shows how many files there are and their unpacked size.
- Click Download next to a single file, or Download all as ZIP. The ZIP keeps the folders exactly as they are in the 7z.

Tips
- The unpacked size can be several times the size of the .7z. Check the total in the status line before you save everything on a phone with little free space.
