Open RAR Files Online extracts the files from a RAR archive without WinRAR or any other app. Drop the .rar file on the page, see every file with its folder and size, and download single files or everything as a ZIP. It reads both RAR4 and RAR5 and works in your browser on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android.
Why RAR files are hard to open
RAR is the format of WinRAR, a Windows program. It is still common for email attachments, files from file-sharing sites, subtitle packs and older forum downloads. macOS, iPhone, iPad, Android and ChromeOS have no built-in RAR support, and Windows only gained it in recent versions of Windows 11. On older or locked-down PCs, a double-click on a .rar file usually gets you an “open with” prompt.
Typical situations
| You have | What to do |
|---|---|
| A RAR attachment on a Mac | Drop it here; no app to install |
| A RAR on your iPhone or iPad | Open this page in Safari and choose the file |
| A work laptop where you cannot install WinRAR | Extract it in the browser |
| A RAR someone needs as ZIP | Use Download all as ZIP |
RAR4 and RAR5
WinRAR switched to the newer RAR5 format by default in version 5.50. Some older free unpackers only read RAR4 and fail on newer files with a “not a valid archive” message. Both versions open here, and you do not need to know which one you have.
Common problems
- “Could not read this archive”: the download is often incomplete. Download it again and check that the size matches.
- Files named .part1.rar, .part2.rar or .r00: this is a split archive. Multi-part RAR is not supported; ask the sender for a single file or a ZIP.
- Password requested or wrong password message: encrypted RAR content cannot be opened here.
- Large archives on a phone: everything is unpacked in memory, so download single files rather than the whole archive.
The RAR is opened in your browser and never uploaded, which matters when the archive holds contracts, invoices or photos.
