RAR to ZIP converts a RAR archive into a ZIP with the same files and folders. Drop the RAR, click Download all as ZIP, and you get a ZIP that anyone can open without WinRAR. The same button works for 7z, TAR, TAR.GZ and GZ archives.
How the conversion works
There is no direct RAR-to-ZIP format translation. The files are unpacked from the RAR in your browser, then packed again into a new ZIP with the same folder structure. Your original RAR is not changed. The ZIP gets the name of the archive, so photos.rar becomes photos.zip and backup.tar.gz becomes backup.zip.
When ZIP is the better choice
| Situation | Why ZIP |
|---|---|
| Sending files to someone on a Mac or phone | Opens with a tap |
| An upload form that only takes ZIP | ZIP is the standard |
| Long-term storage | Readable everywhere for years |
| A school or office PC without WinRAR | Windows opens ZIP on its own |
RAR and the ZIP you get
| RAR | ZIP from this page | |
|---|---|---|
| Folders and file names | As created | Kept the same |
| Compression | Usually tighter | Standard; documents shrink, photos and videos are stored |
| Opens on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android | Needs an app on most | Yes, built in |
| Password | Possible | None (encrypted RARs cannot be converted) |
Step by step
- Click Choose an archive and pick the .rar file.
- Check the file list. On this page Download all as ZIP is the main button.
- Click it. A progress bar fills while each file is unpacked and added, then the ZIP is saved.
Tips
- Only need a few files? Click Download next to them instead; you do not need a ZIP at all.
- Want to leave something out of the ZIP? Download the files you need, then pack them with Create ZIP, where you can also choose the compression.
- Split archives (.part1.rar, .part2.rar) cannot be converted. Ask the sender for one file.
- On a phone, very large archives may not fit in memory. Use a computer for multi-gigabyte RARs.
The RAR is unpacked and repacked in your browser, so nothing is uploaded at any point.
