EML Viewer

Open .eml email files in your browser: read the message, sender, date and attachments, without a mail app. Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

EML Viewer opens .eml files, emails saved from Gmail, Thunderbird, Apple Mail or Outlook on the web, and shows the subject, sender, date, message and attachments. No mail app is needed and the email never leaves your device.

What you see

Part Shown as
Subject, From, To, Cc, Date A header block at the top
HTML message Formatted, with images placed in the email
Plain-text message The text as written
Attachments A list with names and sizes; click one to save it

The HTML of the message is cleaned before it is displayed, so scripts in an email are never run.

Where .eml files come from

An .eml file is one email in the standard internet message format (MIME). You usually get one in these situations:

Program How to save an email as .eml
Gmail Open the email, click the three-dot menu, choose Download message
Thunderbird Select the email, then File → Save As → File
Apple Mail Drag the email to the desktop or a Finder window
Outlook on the web, Outlook for Mac Download the message or drag it out; it is saved as .eml
Any webmail Forward the email as an attachment; the attached copy is .eml

When it is useful

  • An email forwarded as an attachment: phones and some mail apps show the .eml as a file instead of a message. Open it here to read it.
  • Evidence or records: check the exact date, sender address and recipients of a saved message without importing it into your mailbox.
  • An old export: read individual messages from a backup when the original account or program is gone.
  • Getting an attachment out: save a PDF or photo from inside an .eml without setting up a mail client.

Not supported here

Outlook desktop saves messages as .msg, a different format that this viewer does not open yet. Whole mailbox exports in .mbox format (for example from Google Takeout) open in the main File Viewer, which lists the messages and shows the first one.

Emails are full of addresses, names and private details. Because the file is read in your browser and not uploaded, none of that is shared with anyone.

Frequently asked questions

What is an EML file?

A single email saved in the standard internet format, used by Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Gmail downloads and many other programs.

Do I need a mail app?

No. The email is shown here, in your browser.

Is the email uploaded?

No. The file is opened in your browser, on your device, and never sent anywhere.

Can I download the attachments?

Yes. Each attachment is listed with its name and size; click it to save it. Images placed inside the message are shown in the body.

Does it open Outlook .msg files?

Not yet. Ask the sender to forward the message as an attachment from Outlook on the web or Gmail, which gives an .eml file, or open the .msg in Outlook.

Is it safe to open an EML from an unknown sender?

Scripts in the message are removed before it is shown, so viewing it runs nothing. Attachments are only saved when you click them; treat them with the usual care.
