Original PDF

Changed PDF

Got a new version of a contract, a lease or a report and need to know what is different? Choose the original PDF and the changed PDF, and this page shows the differences: changed words highlighted side by side, or a red and green overlay of every page. Both files stay on your device.

Compare two versions

  1. Choose the older file on the left and the newer one on the right.
  2. Pick Text differences for words, or Visual overlay for scans and layouts.
  3. Tick Show only changes for a long document, then click Compare.
  4. Save the list of changes with Download report.

What to check in common documents

Document Look for Mode
Contract or lease Changed amounts, dates, notice periods, new clauses Text differences
Terms and policies Added or removed sentences Text differences, show only changes
Scanned signed copy vs the draft Anything added by hand, missing pages Visual overlay
Drawings, plans, artwork Moved or changed elements Visual overlay
Two exports of the same file Any visible difference at all Visual overlay

Tips

  • Both files must be PDFs. Convert a Word version first with Word to PDF.
  • If a page was inserted near the start, the overlay shows every later page as different; the text mode handles that better.
  • Want to mark what you found for others? Use Highlight PDF.
  • More on both modes: Compare PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Which file goes on which side?

Put the older version, the original, on the left and the newer one, the changed PDF, on the right. Removed text is then marked on the left and added text on the right; in the overlay, red is only in the original and green only in the new file.

Can I compare a Word file with a PDF?

Not directly; both files must be PDFs. Save the Word file as PDF first, for example with Word to PDF, then compare the two PDFs.

Does it show formatting changes like bold or a new font?

The text mode compares the words only. A change in font, colour or position shows up in Visual overlay, where any pixel that differs is marked.

Can it compare two different documents, not versions?

It can, but the result is most useful for two versions of the same document. For unrelated files, nearly every line will show as changed.

Are the files uploaded?

No. Both PDFs stay on your device and are compared in your browser.
