PDF to Word turns a PDF into an editable Word document (.docx). Lines are joined back into paragraphs, and headings, lists, bold and italic text, tables and pictures are kept. Scanned pages are read with text recognition. The conversion runs in your browser, so your PDF is never uploaded.
How to convert PDF to Word
- Click Choose a PDF or drop a PDF on the page. If it is protected, type its password and click Open.
- Check the options: Text, Rebuild tables as Word tables, Keep pictures and, for scans, Text language.
- Click Convert to Word. The .docx is saved with the same name as the PDF. Open it in Word, Google Docs, Pages or LibreOffice.
What is kept
| In the PDF | In the Word document |
|---|---|
| Lines of text | Flowing paragraphs that rewrap when you edit |
| Titles and section headings | Word headings (Heading 1, Heading 2) |
| Bulleted and numbered lists | List items with their bullets or numbers and indent |
| Bold, italic, font sizes, alignment | Kept |
| Two-column pages | Read column by column, in reading order |
| Tables | Real Word tables with rows, columns and merged cells (option) |
| Pictures | Placed where they were on the page (option) |
| Headers and footers repeated on every page | Removed, so they do not interrupt the text |
| Page breaks | Each PDF page starts a new page |
Scanned PDF to Word
When a page has no text layer, such as a scan or a photo saved as PDF, it is read with text recognition (OCR). Choose Read every page as a scan when a PDF has a broken or garbled text layer, so every page is read from its image. For documents in Korean, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Thai, Greek, Tamil or Telugu, pick the language under Text language first. See Scanned PDF to Word.
What to expect
- Text, headings, lists and tables convert well from PDFs made by Word, Google Docs or other software.
- Brochures, forms and designed pages with text boxes, form fields or text at exact positions are approximated: the words come across, but the layout is rebuilt as ordinary paragraphs, not copied pixel for pixel.
- Text recognition can misread small or blurry print. Check names, numbers and amounts from scans.
Tips
- Only need the text? PDF to Text copies it straight away. Only the tables? Use PDF to Excel.
- Back to PDF after editing? Use Word to PDF.
- Just filling in or signing? You may not need Word at all: try Sign PDF.
