Compress PNG Images

Shrink PNG screenshots, icons and graphics in your browser while keeping transparency. Lossless or 256 colours. Free, batch, nothing uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

Compress PNG makes PNG files smaller in your browser and keeps their transparency. It works best on screenshots, logos, icons, illustrations and UI graphics, which often shrink by 60–80% when reduced to 256 colours.

Lossless or 256 colours?

Mode Size saving Image changes Best for
Reduce PNG colours (on) Large Up to 256 colours, usually invisible Screenshots, icons, logos, illustrations
Lossless (off) Small to medium None, every pixel identical Technical images, pixel art, when exact pixels matter

Only PNG files can be added on this page. For photos stored as PNG, PNG to JPG usually gives a much smaller file.

Why PNG files get so big

PNG stores every pixel exactly. A screenshot of a full HD screen holds about two million pixels, and a high-resolution laptop or phone screen several times that. Apps also save PNGs quickly rather than compactly. Two things make them smaller here: the lossless mode re-packs the same pixels more efficiently, and the colour mode picks the 256 colours that matter most and maps every pixel to one of them, which a typical screenshot or logo never needed more than anyway.

Which images suit which mode

Image Reduce colours Expect
App or website screenshot On Much smaller, text stays crisp
Logo or icon with transparency On Much smaller, soft edges kept
Chart or diagram On Much smaller
Photo saved as PNG Off, or convert to JPG Colour reduction can cause banding in skies and gradients
Pixel art, medical or technical images Off Every pixel identical

Tips for best results

  • Check gradients. After compressing with colours reduced, zoom into shadows, skies and soft backgrounds. If you see steps or bands, switch the option off for that image.
  • Crop before compressing. Cutting away empty space or a desktop background around a screenshot saves more than any setting.
  • Need transparency and a small file? Set Format to WebP. It keeps transparency and is usually smaller than any PNG.

Your PNG files are compressed in the browser, so screenshots of chats, accounts and documents stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

How does PNG compression work here?

With Reduce PNG colours on, the image is limited to at most 256 well-chosen colours, which usually cuts the size by more than half. With it off, the PNG is re-packed losslessly, which saves less but keeps every pixel identical.

Is transparency kept?

Yes, in both modes. Transparent and semi-transparent areas stay as they were.

When should I turn colour reduction off?

For photos saved as PNG or images with smooth gradients, 256 colours can cause visible banding. Turn it off, or convert photos to JPG, which is far smaller for photographic content.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The PNG files are compressed in your browser and saved to your device.

Can the result be bigger than my PNG?

No. If the compressed PNG would not be smaller, the original file is kept and marked as already well compressed.

Can I compress a PNG to an exact size, such as 200 KB?

PNG cannot be squeezed to an exact size. With Target size, the image is saved as JPG instead, or as WebP if it has transparent areas, so the transparency survives.
