QR Code Scanner

Scan a QR code or barcode from a photo, screenshot or your camera in the browser. Reads links, Wi-Fi passwords, contacts and more. Free, nothing uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

QR Code Scanner reads QR codes and barcodes from a photo, a screenshot or your camera, in your browser. It understands what is inside, such as a link, Wi-Fi network and password, contact card, e-mail address, phone number, text message or location, and shows it in plain words with a Copy button. Nothing is uploaded: the image and the camera picture are analysed on your device.

How to scan a QR code

From an image or screenshot:

  1. Under Scan from, keep Image or screenshot.
  2. Click Choose an image, drop a file on the page, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  3. The codes are outlined on the image and their contents are listed below. Click Copy to copy one.

With the camera:

  1. Choose Camera and click Start camera. Allow camera access when your browser asks.
  2. Point the camera at the code. On phones the rear camera is used; on a computer with several cameras, pick one under Camera.
  3. The result appears as soon as the code is read.

What it can read

Code type Examples of where you find it
QR Code, Micro QR Links, menus, tickets, Wi-Fi, payments
Data Matrix Electronic parts, medicine packs, labels
PDF417 Boarding passes, ID cards
Aztec Train and transport tickets
EAN, UPC Products in shops, books
Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar, GS1 DataBar Shipping labels, cartons, inventory, libraries

It tries hard to find a code: rotated, upside-down, inverted (light on dark) and small codes in a large photo are all searched for, and several codes in one image are read together.

What it shows

Content Shown as
Link The full address, a warning to check it, and an Open link button
Wi-Fi Network name, password and security type
Contact (vCard) Name, phone, e-mail and other fields
E-mail The address to write to
Phone number The number
Text message The number and the message
Location The coordinates
Anything else The plain text, ready to copy

A QR code can lead anywhere, and you cannot tell by looking at it. Fake QR stickers are sometimes placed over real ones on parking meters, posters and restaurant tables to send people to look-alike payment or login pages. The scanner never opens a link on its own: read the address first, make sure it is the site you expect, and only then click Open link.

Tips for codes that will not scan

  • Use a sharp image. If a photo is blurry, take another one closer and in better light.
  • Crop the picture around the code with Crop Image if there is a lot of other detail.
  • Damaged or partly covered codes may not be readable at all.
  • Need to make a code instead? Use QR Code Generator or Barcode Generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I scan a QR code from a screenshot?

Take the screenshot, then press Ctrl+V on this page (Cmd+V on a Mac) to paste it, or choose or drop the image file. The code is found and read straight away, even if it is only a small part of the picture.

Is the image or camera picture uploaded?

No. The image and the camera picture are analysed in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, which matters for Wi-Fi passwords, tickets and payment codes.

Can it read a Wi-Fi QR code?

Yes. It shows the network name, the password and the security type separately, so you can copy the password and type it in on a device that cannot scan.

Which codes can it read?

QR Code, Micro QR, Data Matrix, PDF417 and Aztec, plus 1D barcodes: EAN, UPC, Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, ITF, Codabar and GS1 DataBar. If an image has several codes, all of them are read and outlined.

Is it safe to open the link in a QR code?

Check the address first. QR codes in public places, such as on parking meters or posters, are sometimes covered with fake stickers that lead to look-alike sites. The scanner shows the full link before you open it, so you can see where it goes.

Why does the camera not start?

Your browser asks for permission the first time; allow camera access for this site. The camera also needs a secure page and no other app using it. On phones the rear camera is used, and on computers with several cameras you can pick one.
