Mute Video removes the audio track from a video and saves it as a silent MP4: for a background clip on a website, a video for a presentation, or a recording with noise you don’t want to share. It runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
When to remove the sound
| Situation | Why |
|---|---|
| Background video on a website | Autoplay works best without sound |
| Slides and presentations | No surprise audio |
| Sharing a recording | Remove private conversations or noise |
| Re-using a clip with new music | Avoid a second soundtrack playing over yours |
| Copyright-sensitive re-uploads | Drop a music bed you do not have rights to |
Why remove the track instead of turning the volume down
Muting in a player or an editor only hides the sound; the file still carries it. Removing the track is different:
- Anyone who downloads the file cannot turn the sound back up, which matters when you post a clip of a meeting, a classroom, or a street where other people can be heard.
- Platforms that scan uploads for copyrighted music have nothing to match against.
- A presentation or a shared screen will not suddenly play a recorded voice if there is no sound in the file.
This page writes an MP4 with the picture only. Remove sound is already ticked; you only need to drop the file and click Convert. If the source is H.264 in MP4 or MOV, the picture is copied and the conversion is quick. Other codecs are re-encoded at the original bitrate.
Typical uses
A looping hero video on a landing page. Export from your camera or phone, mute it here, then compress if the page has a size budget.
A screen recording you will voice over later. Muting now means the editor will not mix two voices.
A clip with a commercial song in the background. Muting does not make the video yours to reuse in every case, but it does stop that track from going out with the file. Add music you have a licence for afterwards with Replace Audio in Video, which swaps the sound in one step without re-encoding the picture.
After you mute
The download is named with -muted so it is obvious next to the original. To cut the clip down as well, use Trim Video and tick Remove sound there instead, so you only process the part you keep. To make the silent file smaller, use Video Compressor, which also has a Remove sound option.
