JPG to WebP Converter

Convert JPG photos to WebP in your browser for faster websites and smaller files. Choose the quality, batch convert, free, and nothing is uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

JPG to WebP converts your JPG photos into WebP, the image format modern websites use to load faster. Convert a batch of photos in your browser, choose the quality, and download them in a ZIP file.

Why use WebP on a website

Benefit What it means
Smaller files Pages load faster, which helps visitors on mobile data and page-speed scores
Works everywhere Supported by all current browsers
Transparency and animation One format instead of PNG and GIF

WebP is already selected on this page, and only JPG files can be added. Photo EXIF data, including GPS location, is not copied into the WebP files, which also saves a few kilobytes. Want them even smaller? Run them through Compress Image afterwards.

Quality settings

Setting WebP quality Use it for
Maximum 95 Hero images and photos viewed full screen
High (default) 90 Product photos, blog images, galleries
Medium 80 Thumbnails, backgrounds, cards in a list

Converting from JPG decodes the photo and encodes it again, so it is one more round of lossy compression. At High the difference is very hard to see; avoid converting the same picture back and forth between JPG and WebP.

A simple workflow for website images

  1. Resize each photo to the largest width it will be shown at, for example 1600 pixels for a full-width image or 800 for a blog column, with Resize Image.
  2. Convert the resized JPGs here at High quality.
  3. Upload the WebP files to your CMS, shop or static site, with a descriptive file name and alt text.

Page-speed tools often report “Serve images in next-gen formats”. Converting the largest images on the page, usually the hero image and product photos, is what makes the biggest difference.

When to keep JPG

  • Email newsletters: some email programs still do not display WebP reliably.
  • Files you send to people to download, print or edit, since older desktop apps may not open WebP.
  • Marketplaces or forms that list only JPG and PNG as accepted formats.

The WebP files are encoded in your browser, so photos are not uploaded at any point.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?

At similar visual quality, WebP files are typically about 25–35% smaller than JPG. Exact savings depend on the photo and the quality you choose.

Do all browsers support WebP?

Yes. All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display WebP, so it is safe to use on websites.

Which quality should I choose?

High is a good default for website photos. Medium gives smaller files for thumbnails and backgrounds. Maximum is for photos that will be viewed full screen.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The WebP files are encoded in your browser and saved straight to your device.

Can I upload WebP to WordPress?

Yes. WordPress accepts WebP uploads since version 5.8, and most site builders and online shops accept it too.

Should I resize photos before converting?

Yes, if they are much larger than they will be shown. A 4000-pixel photo displayed 1200 pixels wide wastes most of its bytes, even as WebP. Use Resize Image first.
