Extract Text from Image

Extract the text from a photo, picture or scan and copy it: book pages, signs, notes, posters. Free, works in your browser, and the image is never uploaded.

Runs in your browser. Your files are never uploaded. How it works

Extract Text from Image pulls the words out of a picture so you can copy, edit or search them. Use it on photos of book pages, printed letters, posters, signs, menus and slides; the text appears in a box you can correct and copy, and the image stays on your device.

Photo tips for better results

Do Avoid
Hold the phone parallel to the page Steep angles that make lines slant
Use daylight or even room light Flash glare and strong shadows across the text
Fill the frame with the text Tiny text in a wide shot
Tap to focus on the words Motion blur from a moving hand

After extracting

  • Paste the text into a document or note app to keep it.
  • Paste it into a translator to read a sign or menu in another language.
  • Search for a quote or product name you photographed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I extract text from a photo taken with my phone?

Yes. Photos of printed text work well when the text is in focus, evenly lit and photographed straight on. iPhone HEIC photos can be used directly.

What if some words are wrong?

The extracted text appears in an editable box. Fix any misread words there before you copy it or download it as a .txt file.

Does it work on handwriting?

Not reliably. It is made for printed and on-screen text; neat block capitals sometimes work, joined-up handwriting usually does not.

Can it extract text from a PDF?

Not directly. Save the PDF page as an image first, for example with PDF to JPG on this site, then extract the text from that image.
